SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea between July 23-29, 2009.


23 The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Cabinet Premier Kim Yong-il sent a congratulatory message to Javier Velasquez Quesquen on July 16 upon his appointment as prime minister of Peru.

23 Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Ahmed Najef, prime minister of Egypt, to mark the 57th anniversary of the July 23 revolution, a significant national holiday in the African nation.

23 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun holds talks with Arnaldo Carrilho, Brazil's newly appointed ambassador to Pyongyang, at Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

23 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), sends a message of greetings to Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, president of Egypt, to mark the anniversary of the Cuban revolution.

23 Pak Keun-gwang, North Korea's roving ambassador, delivers a keynote speech at the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Thailand in which he defended Pyongyang's launch of a long-range rocket and a second nuclear test. He arrived in Thailand on July 21 as head of the North Korean delegation.

25 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Mohamed Nasheed, president of Maldives, on its independence day.

25 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia, on its independence day.

25 Kim Yong-nam sends a congratulatory message to Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz upon his election as president of Mauritania.

25 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Alan Garcia Perez, president of Peru, on the 188th anniversary of its independence.

26 A national meeting is held at the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang to mark the 56th anniversary of the signing of an armistice ending the Korean War, attended by Kim Yong-chun, vice chairman of the NDC and minister of the people's armed forces. North Korea celebrates the occasion as the "anniversary of victory in the fatherland liberation war."

26 A dance party is held at a public square in Pyongyang by the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces in celebration of the 56th anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

27 Dance parties are held in various parts of the country to celebrate the armistice anniversary.

27 Military leaders hold an oath-taking meeting in Pyongyang to mark the 56th year of the armistice.

27 A foreign ministry spokesman issues a statement demanding a new "specific" form of dialogue to resolve the international nuclear stalemate and reiterating Pyongyang's stance that it won't return to the six-party talks. The remark is being widely interpreted as an apparent call for bilateral talks with the U.S.

28 The KCNA says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il enjoyed a performance given by the Merited State Chorus marking the armistice anniversary.

28 The KCNA says the Pyongyang International Architectural Book Exhibition will be held at the Grand People's Study House in Pyongyang from Aug. 3-5.

29 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Mohamed VI, king of Morocco, on the country's national day.

29 The KCNA says the State Academy Beryozka Dancing Troupe of Russia, named after N.S. Nadezhdina, gave performances in Wonsan, Kangwon Province, from July 22 to 28.
