SEOUL, March 27 (Yonhap) -- Eight government officials, seven of them from the agriculture ministry, were killed in a car accident on the nation's central west coast Friday night while traveling together in a van after a workshop, police said Saturday.

The accident occurred on a beach in Taean, about 150 kilometers south of Seoul, around 11:00 p.m., when the van carrying the eight officials crashed into a beachside rock, police said.

The victims were seven agriculture ministry officials, including Kim Young-jun, director of the ministry's regional economy development department, and an official of the Taean County office, who was driving the car, police said.

The civil servants were visiting Taean to attend a workshop, ministry officials said, and the accident took place after the workshop and a group dinner.

Police said they were investigating why the officials were riding in a van along the beach in the middle of the night.
