SEOUL, April 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Prime Minister Chung Un-chan called off his scheduled trip to Poland for the funeral of the late Polish president and his wife Saturday, due to the shutdown of airports in Europe following the eruption of a glacial volcano in Iceland, Chung's office said.

The prime minister was earlier scheduled to depart Saturday to attend the state funeral of late Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash in Russia last weekend.

"The government decided to cancel the trip by Prime Minister Chung and other delegates to Poland as most flights to Europe have been canceled due to the shutdown of airports," an official from the prime minister's office told reporters.

A huge plume of smoke and ash from the volcano's eruption has spread across Europe, hindering visibility.

The official said the country's ambassador to Poland, Lee Joon-jae, will attend the funeral, scheduled for Sunday, as the head delegate of the government.
