SEOUL, April 23 (Yonhap) -- Traffic accidents involving hit-and-runs occurred most frequently on Friday nights this year, the National Police Agency (NPA) said Friday.

In the first three months of this year, a total of 2,402 car accidents were reported to police where drivers fled the scene after hitting people or other vehicles. About 16 percent of them, or 387 cases, occurred on a Friday night, according to NPA statistics.

Saturdays saw the second largest number of hit-and-run incidents with 378 cases, followed by Sundays with 354, Thursdays with 351, Wednesdays with 330, and Tuesdays with 323. Mondays came last with 279 incidents, the agency said.

This year's total number of hit-and-run accidents, however, has dropped by 20.9 percent from last year to 2,402, also recording a 20 percent decrease in the death rate.

"A strengthened crackdown on drunken driving might have been the cause," an NPA official said.
