SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- The Sonata mid-size sedan by Hyundai Motor Co. took the ninth spot in the ranking of sales by vehicle models in the United States in April, the first time the Hyundai model has broken into the monthly top 10 ranking, industry data showed Tuesday.

Last month, Hyundai sold a total of 18,536 Sonatas in the U.S., helped by better-than-expected sales of the revamped model, according to the data.

Ford Motor Co.'s F-series pickup truck was No. 1 with 40,946 units sold last month in the U.S., followed by General Motor Co.'s full-size pickup Silverado with 29,618 units.

Hyundai, South Korea's top carmaker, sold a total of 44,023 vehicles in the U.S. last month, up 30 percent from a year ago.

It marked the 16th consecutive month of on-year retail market share gains by Hyundai, the company's U.S. affiliate said in a statement.
