Migrant worker deaths, injuries at workplaces rise: report

SEOUL, June 7 (Yonhap) -- The number of migrant workers who died or were injured at South Korea's workplaces has risen over the last three years to reach nearly 14,500, a report showed Monday.

According to the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, there were 305 deaths from 14,419 industrial accidents involving foreigners in the 2007-2009 period.

There were 5,231 injuries reported in 2009, an increase from 3,967 in 2007 and 5,221 in 2008, the report said. In 2009, there were 101 deaths, an increase from 87 in 2007, but a drop from 117 in 2008.

Over 1 million foreigners were registered as living in South Korean as of May 2009, with 52 percent of them being migrant workers, the most recent census showed.
