SEOUL, Nov. 15 (Yonhap) -- A former U.S. State Department official who visited North Korea last year amid nuclear standoffs has arrived in Pyongyang, the communist country's official news agency said Monday.

Morton Abramowitz, a senior fellow at The Century Foundation and a former U.S. diplomat, led a group of U.S. experts in North Korean affairs to the capital, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. The state media did not elaborate on the purpose of their visit or the duration of their stay.

Abramowitz, whose previous positions include a stint as special assistant to the deputy secretary of state, was one of six civil representatives to accompany Stephen Bosworth, U.S. special representative for North Korean policy, to the hermit state in February 2009 to discuss the stalled six-party nuclear talks.
