SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest mobile phone maker, said Wednesday it will release an 8.9-inch tablet computer built on an Android system during the first half of this year.

The 8.9-inch tablet will be released in the global market through mobile operators, a company spokesman said by phone, without disclosing further details or launching dates. Local media reported that the 8.9-inch tablet could hit shelves as early as next month.

Last week in Barcelona, Samsung gave a first public look at its second tablet computer, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is a bigger and faster version of its earlier 7-inch Galaxy Tab.

The latest model was seen as the company's mounting a direct challenge against the iPad, the 9.7-inch mobile device by Apple Inc. that sparked a booming demand for mobile devices with a large screen.

Samsung's domestic rival LG Electronics Inc. announced at the same trade show its 8.9-inch tablet computer that can record, play back and share 3-D videos.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is named after its 10.1-inch screen, will be launched in the domestic market as early as March in South Korea through SK Telecom Co., the Samsung spokesman said. The tablet will also hit the European market next month but the U.S. launch is undecided.

Samsung, which sold 1.5 million units of the tablet computer in 2010, aims to lift tablet computer sales by five-fold to 7.5 million units this week, Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung's mobile business, said last week.
