YEOSU, South Korea, March 14 (Yonhap) -- An exhibition center at the site of the upcoming Yeosu Expo caught fire Wednesday, but no casualties were reported, police said.

The fire destroyed 500 square meters of a vegetation mat covering the roof of the three-story building under construction for completion at the end of this month, the police said.

Yeosu, some 455 kilometers south of Seoul, is set to host the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea from May 12 through Aug. 12, with more than 109 nations and international organizations participating. The large-scale maritime festival will be held under the main theme, "The Living Ocean and Coast."

Police said they suspect the fire may have started during welding work, although they are investigating the exact cause through eyewitness accounts.

"There was no internal damage as the fire erupted on the roof of the building," said an Expo official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "If we start repair work right away, there shouldn't be major disruptions to preparations for the Expo."
