BUSAN, Oct. 12 (Yonhap) -- The Lotte Giants defeated the Doosan Bears 4-3 in extra innings on Friday to take the opening round of the playoffs in South Korea's top baseball league.

In the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) action at Sajik Stadium here, about 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul, Park Joon-seo scored from second on a wild pitch and a throwing error in the bottom of the 10th, as the Giants erased a 3-0 deficit to take the best-of-five series in four games.

With Park on second following a single and a sacrifice bunt, Doosan's reliever Scott Proctor threw a wild pitch. Then catcher Yang Eui-ji's throw to third rolled to left field, allowing Park to score the winning run.

In the next round, the Giants will take on the SK Wyverns, which finished second in the regular season and received the bye to the second stage. The best-of-five series between these two teams will begin next Tuesday.

The Bears got on board first with Yun Seok-min's solo home run in the top second. Yun drove in another run with a single in the top third, and Lee Won-seok gave the Bears a 3-0 cushion with a double in the top eighth.

The Giants pulled even in the bottom of the eighth. Kim Joo-chan launched a run-scoring double, and Doosan reliever Hong Sang-sam walked in a run with the bases loaded before Jeon Jun-woo hit a sacrifice fly to right for the tying run.

Then in the bottom of the 10th, both Proctor and Yang went wild.

Doosan starter Kim Sun-woo, former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, blanked the Giants for five innings, scattering six hits in a no-decision.

Dustin Nippert, who started the first game of the series for Doosan, was tagged for three earned runs in 1/3 innings of relief work. Hong took the loss after getting charged with the winning run.

Ko Won-jun, Lotte's starter, lasted only 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, including the home run to Yoon. Reliever Chong Tae-hyon was credited with the win thanks to two scoreless innings, and was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the series.

Hong Sung-heun went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Giants. Park Joon-seo and Son A-seop had two hits apiece. Yun Seok-min, Lee Won-seok and Kim Jae-ho each had two hits for the Bears in the losing cause.

With the series victory, the Giants erased the memory of their monumental collapse against the Bears in the first round in 2010. The Giants won the first two games at the time, only to drop the next three to be eliminated.

In the KBO, the regular season champion earns a bye to the championship Korean Series. The No. 3 and the No. 4 teams play in the first round, with the winner going on to meet the No. 2 regular season club in the second round, which is also best-of-five.

The Samsung Lions, the defending champions, finished first for the second straight regular season and have reached the Korean Series.
