(profile) Architect of 'trustpolitik' tapped as unification minister

SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- Unification Minister nominee Ryoo Kihl-jae is known for being one of the key architects for President-elect Park Geun-hye's "trustpolitik" doctrine that calls for engagement with North Korea while standing firm against any provocations.

North Korea's third underground nuclear test, however, is set to thrust Ryoo, 54, into a daunting security challenge even before the new government takes office on Feb. 25.

Since 1987, Ryoo has been studying North Korean matters while serving as professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies, a renowned think tank that provides expert knowledge on the communist state, inter-Korean relations, unification, and regional peace and security issues, among other issues.

Along with Yun Byung-se, nominated as foreign minister and another key player in formulating the "trustpolitk" policy, Ryoo is expected to push for a dialogue with North Korea in the face of the North's recent nuclear test.

Park had campaigned on a pledge to seek what is dubbed the "Korean Peninsula trust process," a policy that calls for greater exchanges and dialogue with the North so as to build trust and reduce tensions across the heavily fortified border.
