SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest smartphone maker, announced on Wednesday that it will maintain its current three business divisions next year but rearrange some units as part of synergy efforts.

Samsung's operations are currently divided into Consumer Electronics, IT and Mobile, which oversee handsets and network products, and Device Solutions, which covers electronic components such as computer memory chips.

The current heads of each business division, Yoon Boo-keun, Shin Jong-kyun and Kwon Oh-hyun, will continue to lead each umbrella unit, it said.

Last year, Samsung rearranged its business divisions in a bid to reinforce the responsibilities of each head and help them cope with changes in the global market.

Samsung said its digital imaging business unit will be put under the IT and Mobile division, a move aimed at bolstering synergy between its own digital camera technology and smart devices.

Also, the world's largest flat-panel TV maker said it would create a center that caters to so-called big data-related business.

Big data refers to massive amounts of information, which could be used to detect patterns and answer complex business questions.

South Korea's big data technology lags behind that of global tech companies such as Google and Amazon, lacking the infrastructure and experience to thrive in the relatively new but promising field.

Samsung Electronics, the key unit of South Korea's largest family-owned conglomerate Samsung Group, is the world's biggest maker of smartphones, TVs and computer memory chips.

Samsung's third-quarter profit spiked 26 percent from a year earlier to a record 8.24 trillion won (US$7.83 billion), buoyed by robust shipments of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones and higher chip prices.

Revenue soared 13.2 percent on-year to 59.08 trillion won in the third quarter and operating profit climbed 26 percent to a record 10.16 trillion won.
