SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Yonhap) -- The United States Forces Korea announced Saturday it plans to deploy 12 F-16 fighters to South Korea this month, in line with its efforts to maintain military capability in the Asia-Pacific region.

The aircraft, which are currently located at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, are slated to be dispatched here by mid-January along with 300 personnel, the U.S. 7th Air Force said.

The 7th Air Force said the latest move demonstrates the continuing U.S. commitment to stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region.

The movement of U.S. Air Force fighters to the Pacific has been ongoing since March 2004 in order to maintain a deterrent against threats to regional security and stability, it added.
