SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will push to win a nonpermanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-29 period, a government official said Wednesday.

Seoul has notified the U.N.'s Asia-Pacific Group of its candidacy for the election of the two-year nonpermanent membership, the official said.

The election for the 2028-29 period will be held in the U.N.'s general meeting around October 2017.

South Korea is currently serving as a UNSC nonpermanent member, its second term since the country's first membership in 1996-97. The current term ends at the end of this year.

"In order to contribute to the international community in accordance with our country's international status and economic might, South Korea needs to hold the seat at least once every 15 years," the official said.
