SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) -- Over 80 percent of the population in South Korea is eligible to vote in the upcoming local elections to be held next month, the election commission said Sunday.

Some 41.29 million people are eligible to vote in the June 4 elections to pick the heads of local governments and councils along with education superintendents, according to the National Election Commission.

The figure represents 80.4 percent of the country's population of 51.33 million.

The number of eligible voters is up about 2.44 million, or 6.3 percent, from the corresponding figure tallied for the local elections held in 2010.

The increase was attributed to the aging and growth of the country's overall population.

The number of male eligible voters totaled 20.44 million, while female voters came to 20.85 million, the commission said.
