Death toll rises to 290 in ferry tragedy

JINDO, South Korea, June 6 (Yonhap) -- One more body was recovered from the sunken ferry Sewol Friday, raising the death toll to 290 and lowering the number of those missing to 14, officials said.

A joint search team of civilian, Coast Guard and military divers found the body of a male passenger at the front of the third deck of the submerged ship, said the government's disaster response team, adding that the man's identity has not yet been confirmed.

The team said that, along with underwater search operations, divers will also cut open the hull at the front of the fourth deck to gain access to unsearched compartments filled with debris.

The search will be focused on the front of the third and fourth decks, along with the lobby on the fifth floor.

The 6,825-ton Sewol was carrying an estimated 476 people, mostly high school students, when it sank off the southwestern island of Jindo on April 16.
