UIJEONGBU, South Korea, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- A big fire broke out Saturday morning at a 10-story apartment building in Uijeongbu, north of Seoul, leaving three dead and 97 people injured, the police said.

Among the injured who were taken to the hospital, five were in critical condition, they said.

The fire is reported to have erupted at 9:25 a.m. from a car parked on the ground floor of the building, blocking off the front entrance and preventing residents from evacuating.

A majority of the residents have been evacuated, while some are waiting for rescue crews on the roof.

The fire caused a severe traffic jam in the area around the building, which is located near the Uijeongbu subway station on Line No. 1.

The police are focusing on finding the cause of the fire, while firefighters are making efforts to rescue residents.
