SEOUL, April 9 (Yonhap) -- Cuban-born pitcher Yunesky Maya threw a no-hitter in the top South Korean baseball league on Thursday.

The right-hander for the Doosan Bears tossed the 12th no-hitter in the 33-year history of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), as he blanked the Nexen Heroes 1-0 at home, Jamsil Stadium in Seoul.

Maya is also the second foreign pitcher to accomplish the feat, after Charlie Shirek of the NC Dinos last year.

Maya gave up three walks and struck out eight. He threw his KBO career-high 136 pitches to improve to 2-1 on the young season.

Maya, 33, joined the Bears in July last year, replacing an ineffective right-hander Chris Volstad. Maya only went 2-4 in 11 starts with a 4.86 ERA in 63 innings, but the Bears gave him another shot for 2015.

He has responded to the team's faith in kind. He was a bit shaky in the season's first start against the Dinos but still earned the victory despite giving up four earned runs in six innings.

Maya was more solid in the second start, holding the Lotte Giants to two earned runs in seven innings, but was the hard luck loser.

Then against the Heroes, Maya faced 30 batters, only three over the minimum. He issued his first walk with one out in the second but then retired the next two batters to flyouts.

With two outs in the seventh, Maya walked two-time former MVP Park Byung-ho but got Yoon Suk-min to pop out to left.

He walked the pinch hitter Lim Byeong-wuk to start the ninth, but he was forced out at second on a grounder by Seo Geon-chang.

Maya threw three straight balls to Lee Taek-keun, but Lee grounded out to short on the fifth pitch of the at-bat.

Maya then struck out Yoo Han-joon, the Heroes' No. 3 hitter, on three pitches to complete the milestone.

For the Bears, Min Byung-hun drove in the eventual winning run with a single in the bottom of the third.
