K-pop star Kim Hyun-joong to enlist in Army

SEOUL, May 5 (Yonhap) -- K-pop star Kim Hyun-joong will enlist in the Army next week to fulfill his mandatory military service, wishing to keep a low profile after being mired in problems with his ex-girlfriend, sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

The 28-year-old will undergo five weeks of basic training at an Army boot camp in Goyang, just north of Seoul, starting next Tuesday before serving on active duty, they said.

The singer-actor has postponed his enlistment since August due to overseas schedules and personal drama with his ex-girlfriend who was rumored to be pregnant with his baby.

His gentle image was tarnished after he was charged with physically abusing the woman, identified only by her surname Choi, whom he had dated for about two years from 2012.

Kim's lawyer said Monday that Choi recently filed a suit against Kim, seeking 1.6 billion won (US$1.5 million) in compensation citing psychological damage from the troubled relationship with him.

All able-bodied South Korean men are subject to compulsory military service for about two years in a country facing North Korea across the heavily fortified border.
