SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Park Geun-hye will send a special envoy to the swearing-in ceremony of Nigeria's new president later this week, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Rep. Lee Ju-young of the ruling Saenuri Party will attend the May 29 event to be held in Abuja, the African nation's capital, it said in a press release. He will be accompanied by two other Saenuri lawmakers -- Park Dae-dong and Lee No-keun.

Lee, a four-term lawmaker and former maritime minister, will celebrate the inauguration of Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria's leader and also meet with high-ranking officials in the new administration in a bid to strengthen ties between the two nations, said the ministry.

South Korea and Nigeria forged diplomatic relations in 1980 and have since cooperated closely in various fields including energy production.

Nigeria is embracing the new leader in the first peaceful power shift since the establishment of a civilian government in 1999.
