Volvo, Jeep, Maserati to recall 812 cars for defects

SEJONG, Jan. 26 (Yonhap) -- Volvo, Jeep and Maserati will recall 812 cars for safety-related mechanical defects, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Tuesday.

According to the ministry, five car models from Swedish automaker Volvo have been found to have a glitch in their engine control modules that provides wrong data on fuel levels. This has led to untimely fuel depletions and the engine turning off while the cars are being driven. A cut in power can make modern cars uncontrollable and lead to accidents.

It said the 562 cars affected include the XC60 compact crossover, as well as the XC70 and the V60CC.

Cars plagued with the glitch were made between April 24, 2014 and Dec. 11, 2015, with the local retail arm of the carmaker Volvo Korea to offer repairs free of charge starting Wednesday.

In regards to the Jeep Cherokee, a midsize SUV, the ministry said the buildup of static electricity when car's wipers are in use has been cited for causing the entire system to fail on 244 cars. The SUVs made between April 6, 2014, and July 1, 2014, have this problem.

The ministry said FCA Korea, the local importer and distributor of Chrysler and Jeep vehicles, will start making repairs Friday.

Besides Volvo and Jeep, authorities said six GranTurismos made by Italian sports carmaker Maserati have been discovered to have problems in pipes that supply fuel to the engine. Pipe leaks can lead to fires that can endanger occupants.

FMK Korea, which sells the Maserati in the country, said only six vehicles are affected, and these were all made on Nov. 26-27. It said drivers can get repairs and new parts when they visit service stations from Friday onwards.

Besides defective cars, the ministry said 153 motorcycles made by Japanese bike maker Yamaha will be recalled for gear transmission problems and six bikes made by the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM will be repaired starting this week for front wheel spoke issues.
