SEOUL, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) -- A Seoul court on Wednesday sentenced a police officer to a six-year prison term for accidentally killing a junior policeman in a firearm accident last year.

The gun accident took place at a police checkpoint in northwestern Seoul last August when a police lieutenant, surnamed "Park," pulled the trigger of his pistol while pointing it at the chest of the 21-year-old junior policeman during a break.

After the junior policeman died from the gunshot, Park told the police that he did not know that bullets were in the gun, saying he had no intention of killing him.

Earlier, the prosecution demanded 12 years in prison for Park on charges of an intentional homicide attempt.

The Seoul court, however, did not recognize the prosecution's purported killing charges against the policeman, saying there was no evidence of intentional manslaughter.
