SEOUL, March 2 (Yonhap) -- CJ CheilJedang Corp., South Korea's leading food company, said Wednesday it has established a research center for Korean food in the United States to step up its presence in the world's largest food market.

The food and bio unit under South Korean conglomerate CJ Group opened the center in Fullerton, California, marking its second overseas food R&D center following a similar one established in China in 2002.

The center will develop a wide range of frozen and processed foods as well as Korean seasonings to better target the taste of U.S. consumers, the company said.

The firm made over 100 billion won (US$811 million) in sales from its Korean dumpling products in the American market last year, while launching flavored seaweed snacks.

CJ CheilJedang has operated its business in the U.S. market targeting Korean residents since the mid-1990s.
