Seoul shares open higher on techs, mobile carriers

SEOUL, March 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean shares opened higher Thursday on the back of gains in tech firms and mobile carriers.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 3.76 points, or 0.19 percent, to 1,951.18 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Tech shares traded higher, with market behemoth Samsung Electronics moving up 0.58 percent and SK hynix advancing 0.65 percent. Samsung Electro-Mechanics added 0.92 percent.

Mobile carriers also opened bullish, with No. 1 SK Telecom rising 0.22 percent and KT moving up 0.17 percent. LG Uplus, the smallest player, edged up 0.49 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,222.70 won against the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., up 4.8 won from the previous session's close.
