BEIJING, March 9 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry held a telephone discussion on Wednesday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi about the situation on the Korean Peninsula, China's foreign ministry said.

Kerry and Wang "exchanged views on bilateral relations, the situation on the Korean Peninsula and other international and regional issues," the Chinese ministry said in a statement.

The brief statement by the Chinese ministry gave no other details.

North Korea has been slapped with new U.N. sanctions after the North's fourth nuclear test and launch of a long-range missile.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said his country has miniaturized nuclear warheads, according to the North's state media earlier on Wednesday.
