PAJU, South Korea, March 9 (Yonhap) -- North Korea sent propaganda leaflets criticizing President Park Geun-hye, military officials said Wednesday, as South Korea and the United States kicked off their largest-ever annual military exercises this week.

Some 1,000 leaflets were picked up in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, located just northwest of Seoul, at around 7:30 a.m., authorities said.

They said the North probably sent the leaflets in an apparent response to the allies' joint military exercises.

The Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises, each a command post-based and field training war game, began their weeks-long drills Monday, amid escalating military tensions between South and North Korea following Pyongyang's nuclear and long-range missile tests earlier this year.
