SEOUL, March 9 (Yonhap) -- A painting of a late South Korean painter fetched 1.7 billion won (US$1.4 million) at an auction in Seoul, an auction official said Wednesday.

The price of Chun Kyung-ja's 1962 painting "Garden" was higher than the 1.15 billion won it sold for at K Auction, a major South Korean auction house, in 2007.

It also beat the previous record price set in 2009 when her painting "Grassland II" was sold at 1.2 billion won, according to K Auction.

Chun, who was famous for her depictions of flowers and women from the 1960s to the 1980s, died last year in New York.

She left for New York in 1998 after donating 93 paintings to the Seoul Museum of Art.

Chun abruptly retired from painting in 1991, when she faced plagiarism charges.
