YEONCHEON, South Korea, March 9 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean army officer was found dead inside a military vehicle near the border with North Korea, military officials said Wednesday.

The body of the 37-year-old major, identified only by his family name Oh, was found with a gunshot wound in the driver's seat on a road in areas off-limits to civilians in Yeoncheon near the central section of the heavily fortified border around 6 p.m., the officials said.

Oh's pistol, with one round fired, was found near the body, though no note was found.

Oh was on his way back to his unit after patrolling the border areas, the officials said.

Military officials said they were trying to determine the cause of the accident.
