SEOUL, March 10 (Yonhap) -- A Japanese version of homegrown mega-hit theater musical "Frankenstein" will open at a Tokyo theater next year, the South Korean production company said Thursday.

Chungmu Art Hall said it has inked a deal with its Japanese counterpart, Toho Co. Ltd, to export the license of the Korean musical and that the Japanese edition will open in January 2017.

"Many Japanese production companies competed over Frankenstein," said Wang Yong-bum, a director of the South Korean version, expressing hopes to sign more licensing agreements with companies from different countries.

"Frankenstein," one of the few original Korean productions, is a musical adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel of the same name. The story depicts Victor's tragedies of being destroyed and reborn as a monstrous creature.

It has earned more than 10 billion won (US$8.2 million) in sales in a 10-week period since it returned to the stage last November.
