SEOUL, March 13 (Yonhap) -- Former national men's football coach Huh Jung-moo applied for a proportional representation ticket in the April general elections for the ruling Saenuri Party on Sunday.

"I've received a lot from football, and I thought I have so much to give back to the people," Huh explained his decision after submitting his application. "We should create an environment where the people will achieve mental and physical health through sports."

Huh denied he had an offer from the party to apply but said that those around him said he should start working for the people in some capacity.

Huh, 61, is currently deputy commissioner of the K League, the country's governing body of professional football. He coached South Korea to the round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the first time South Korea reached the knockout stage at a World Cup held overseas.

As a player, Huh was one of the first South Koreans to join a foreign club, signing with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1980. He won Asian Games gold medals in 1978 and 1986, and represented South Korea at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
