SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading carmaker, said Friday that sales in March edged down 0.9 percent from a year earlier, hurt by its lackluster overseas performance.

Hyundai Motor said in a press release that it sold 432,878 vehicles in March, compared with 436,884 units tallied a year before.

Domestic sales grew 7.2 percent on-year to 62,166 units but its sales in overseas markets shrank 2.2 percent to 370,712 units.

Hyundai Motor attributed the decline in overseas demand to the slowing economic growth in emerging markets, rising currency-related uncertainty and intensifying competition.

During the first three months of the year, its cumulative sales worldwide came to 1,107,369 units, down 6.4 percent from the same period a year earlier, the company said.
