SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- Police said Friday they have booked 10 South Korean hip-hop artists, including singers and producers, on charges of smoking marijuana.

The Seocho Police Station said a 24-year-old hip-hop artist, whose identity was withheld, is accused of smoking the banned substance a number of times from March 2015 till later that year, with his friends and colleagues.

The accused include famous rappers and producers, as well as a person who won second place in a popular television audition program in South Korea, according to police.

A 24-year-old composer, whose identity was withheld, was caught by police in March last year while attempting to steal money at a sauna. In the course of the investigation, the composer tested positive for marijuana.

The suspects said they bought the drug online or from a stranger they met at a club in the popular foreigner district of Itaewon in central Seoul.

They said they used the drug to strengthen their concentration and hearing or to gain confidence, according to police.

Police said they are trying to find out who sold the drug.

Under South Korean law, the use of marijuana is banned and comes with a maximum of five years in jail or a fine of up to 50 million won (US$43,300).
