WASHINGTON, April 4 (Yonhap) -- A renowned U.S. economist was awarded a top state medal from South Korea on Monday for his contribution to the country's economic development and to the relations between the two countries.

South Korean Ambassador Ahn Ho-young presented the Gwanghwa Medal of the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit to Fred Bergsten, senior fellow and director emeritus at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, in a ceremony at the ambassador's residence.

The medal is the highest honor in the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit.

Bergsten, who served in senior positions at the U.S. Department of Treasury and the White House in the 1970s and '80s, is also credited with helping South Korea draw up its economic development plans in the 1960s when he was with the State Department.

Bergsten also served as an adviser to South Korea's government in 2009.

"I've had the opportunity in my rather long career, more than 50 years now, to work closely with a lot of countries. And I must tell you that all the countries I have worked with over that period, the closest to me ... is undoubtedly Korea," he said during the ceremony.

Bergsten also said Korea is "the most dramatic success story in the history of world economics."
