S. Korean shares down 0.8 pct in late morning trade

SEOUL, April 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korean shares traded 0.8 percent lower late Tuesday morning taking a cue from overnight losses in Wall Street, analysts said.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) shed 17.15 points to 1,961.94 as of 11:20 a.m.

Market heavyweights traded mixed

Top market cap Samsung Electronics fell 2.45 percent, and chipmaker SK hynix advanced 0.36 percent.

State-run Korea Electric Power Corp. dropped 2.19 percent, and top automaker Hyundai Motor remained unchanged.

AmorePacific, the country's top cosmetics maker, lost 1.24 percent.

U.S. stocks finished in negative terrain on Monday (local time), as investors locked in recent gains, ending their recent rally in the past few days.

The local currency was changing hands at 1,156.20 won against the greenback, down 10.5 won from the previous session's close.
