SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- Viewership of South Korea's popular TV series "Descendants of the Sun" has surpassed 2 billion on China's video-streaming website, its PR agency said Wednesday.

According to Seoul-based Bliss Media, the accumulated number of views of the 16-episode series on iQiyi in China has exceeded 2 billion, which translates into more than 100 million views per episode.

"It is really rare for a TV show to achieve an accumulated view of more than 2 billion, while it is still on the air," the company said.

In China, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, who play the main characters, rank high on some of China's popularity indexes as the series continues to grip the Chinese audience.

The romantic drama revolves around the love story between an army captain, Yoo Si-jin, who serves in the U.N. peacekeeping forces, and a female doctor named Kang Mo-yeon.

The broadcasting rights of the series have been sold to 32 countries.
