SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- The local unit of German carmaking giant Mercedes-Benz saw its sales in South Korea top 3 trillion won (US$2.62 billion) for the first time among foreign brands last year, industry data showed Thursday.

Mercedes-Benz Korea posted 3.14 trillion won in sales last year, up 42.5 percent from the previous year's 2.2 trillion won, according to the data. This marked the first time that a single foreign brand has registered more than 3 trillion won in sales in Korea.

The spike was attributable to strong demand for German brands despite the so-called diesel gate involving Volkswagen vehicles whose emissions results were found to have been manipulated.

Mercedes-Benz ranked first in terms of sales among foreign brands, followed by BMW Korea, which sold 2.88 trillion won worth of cars. Audi Volkswagen Korea lost its previous year's dominance and slipped to third with its sales of 2.82 trillion won, the data showed.

The combined sales of the three German brands came to 8.84 trillion won, which outperformed carmakers operating plants here -- GM Korea Co., Ssangyong Motor Co. and Renault Samsung Motors Co. Their combined sales stood at around 7.2 trillion won last year.

The trio still trailed Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's two homegrown auto giants, whose domestic sales stood at 19.34 trillion won and 11.64 trillion won last year, respectively, the data showed.
