SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- A subsidiary of South Korea's largest cinema chain, CJ CGV, said Thursday it has recently inked deals to go into the Canadian and Kuwaiti 4DX movie market.

The 4DXPlex Co. said it has signed the contract with Canada's Cineplex and Kuwait's KNCC to open a total of three 4DX movie theaters -- one in Canada and two in Kuwait -- within this year.

The signings were made during CinemaCon 2016, an annual gathering of studio executives and theater owners that lasts till Thursday in Las Vegas, the company said.

Cineplex is Canada's No. 1 cinema chain with 1,666 theaters at 163 venues. The new theater will open in Yonge-Dundas and VIP theater, one of the top five theaters in terms of ticket sales in Toronto, within this year, according to the South Korean company.

The company later signed a contract with the Kuwait National Cinema Company (KNCC) to open two 4DX theaters in the first half of the year.

KNCC runs 54 theaters at 11 venues through its cinema chain, Cinescape.

Also during the CinemaCon convention, the CJ CGV subsidiary also signed a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai Film Group, China's No. 9 theater operator, to open more than 20 4DX theaters in China in the next three years.

China currently has the largest number of 4DX theaters among the 37 countries where the 4DXPlex Co. advanced. The company plans to add five more such theaters in major Chinese cities in the first half.

"With the series of contracts in the CinemaCon, we came to get a step closer to our goal of opening 400 more 4DX theaters till the end of this year," CEO Choi Byung-hwan said.

Developed by South Korea's food and entertainment conglomerate CJ in 2009, 4DX theaters provide various chair-embedded sensory effects, such as puffs of air, scented mist, seat motion and vibration, requiring an array of special equipment.
