SEOUL, April 21 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it will start taking preorders for the Gear 360, a camera that can shoot 360-degrees photos and videos to create virtual-reality contents.

The gadget, first showcased at the Mobile World Congress held in February, was released in line with Samsung's efforts to take the lead in creating the segment's ecosystem. The local price of the device is 399,300 won (US$351).

The official release date of the Gear 360 is April 29.

The round Gear 360 allows users to take videos through two lenses that cover 180 degrees. The device is capable of taking 30-megapixel photos, as well as Ultra HD videos.

Photos taken via the Gear 360 can be shared using Google Inc.'s Street View and other social network services through an application.

It links to not only the Galaxy S7 series, but the previously released Galaxy S6, as well.
