S. Korea's consumer prices rise 0.8 pct on-year in May

SEJONG, June 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's consumer prices grew by less than 1 percent in May for the first time in four months, government data showed Wednesday.

The country's consumer price index rose 0.8 percent last month from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.

The index had stayed above the 1 percent level for three straight months since February for the first time in 17 months.

From a month earlier, the May figure stayed flat.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile oil and food prices, increased 1.9 percent compared with last year, unchanged from a month earlier.
