First KCON France draws curtains in Paris

SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- The world's largest K-pop festival wrapped up its latest edition in Paris with South Korean President Park Geun-hye as one of the guests, convention organizers said Friday.

The one-day KCON France, hosted by South Korean entertainment giant CJ E&M, wowed some 13,500 K-culture fans who swarmed to Accor Hotels Arena for the Korean pop culture event on Thursday night.

A lineup of popular idol groups, including SHINee, f(x), Bangtan Boys, Block B, F.T. Island and I.O.I, took the stage in the MCountdown K-pop Concert, one of the most popular events at KCON, according to CJ E&M.

Among the vendors at KCON were the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and state-run Korea Creative Content Agency. Both set up booths to present Korean traditional cultural products, such as the traditional dress hanbok, handicrafts and food. A virtual reality experience event offered participants the chance to try virtually traveling in South Korea.

"This year's KCON Paris contributed a lot to the global spread of Korean culture, particularly due to the attendance of President Park Geun-hye and the 130th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic ties," CJ E&M said in a press release.

CJ E&M will next host KCON New York in late June and KCON Los Angeles in July.

According to results of a survey by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, 65.8 percent of French respondents said South Korea is a competitive player in the cultural sector.

The same survey revealed that 27.3 percent of French respondents picked Korean cuisine as the most popular Korean cultural product.
