SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) -- A team from Russia took the best dance team title at the final round of a K-pop dance festival held Saturday amid the rising popularity of Korean pop culture worldwide, the Seoul metropolitan city government said.

"Inspirit," who danced to the songs of Girl's Generation, was named the winner of the competition which was held during the 2016 K-pop Cover Dance Festival. The runner-up was from the United States, followed by a Chinese team.

The five-day event kicked off Wednesday, inviting 13 teams from nine countries who had made it to the semi-finals to the country's capital, according to the municipal government.

Among the 13 teams, four teams grabbed the opportunity to compete in the finals during the semi-finals held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in eastern Seoul on Friday.

The online preliminary rounds took place in March and April with the participation of 1,966 teams from 52 countries. Those who made the cut went through another offline competition in their home countries before coming to South Korea.

Saturday's final round at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in western Seoul was followed by the 2016 Dream Concert, which featured renowned K-pop singers, including EXO, SHINee's Taemin, VIXX and B1A4. Also included in this year's lineup were BTOB, T-ara, Red Velvet, Oh My Girl, GFriend and MAMAMOO.

Launched in 1995, the Dream Concert has been held annually with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism sponsoring the event.

"It is a dream shared by many fans to be on the stage of the Dream Concert, where only leading K-pop artists can take part in," a city official said. "We wanted to encourage those young folks by providing this special opportunity to be on the same stage as their idols."
