SEOUL, June 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean movie "The Strangers" was ranked 17th in the North American box office on its first weekend since its full-fledged debut, a U.S. film tracker said Monday.

According to the data compiled by Box Office Mojo, the film posted ticket sales of US$224,700 in the North American market on its first weekend of debut, marking a rare performance for a South Korean movie.

Starring Kwak Do-won, Chun Woo-hee and Hwang Jung-min, the movie, also known as "Goksung" and "The Wailing," features a tranquil rural village embroiled in mysterious serial murders after the arrival of a stranger.

Since its release, the film's English title has been changed twice from "Goksung" to "The Wailing" and then to "The Strangers."

The film first reached Los Angeles on May 20, and has gradually broadened its scope to other parts of the United States and Canada since Friday.

The movie has attracted some 6 million viewers in South Korea, which has around 50 million people.
