WANDO, South Korea, July 26 (Yonhap) -- The government has decided to recognize next year's seaweed expo in the country's southwestern coastal county of Wando as an international event, a county official said Tuesday.

The decision was made at a meeting of the finance ministry's international events screening panel the previous day, which also decided to subsidize some 3 billion won (US$2.63 million) to the event, plus administrative support, the official said.

The 2017 event, set to be held in the county's port and its vicinity for a 24-day run from April 14, will present the future of the seaweed industry, the official said.

"It's meaningful that the Wando expo's status and authority have been recognized at the state level despite the government's strengthened standards for international events," the official said.
