BUSAN, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- A local court on Wednesday convicted a professor on charges of defaming the late President Roh Moo-hyun during his class last year.

The Busan District Court sentenced the philosophy professor at Busan University, identified only by his surname Choi, to six months in prison, suspended for two years, for assigning students to find evidence that the 2002 presidential election had been meddled with. The late Roh was elected president in 2002.

The 61-year-old professor said he will appeal the ruling.

The former president's son, Roh Gun-ho, also filed a separate civil suit against Choi with the district court, seeking 100 million won (US$90,000) in compensation for allegedly defaming the bereaved family. The case is pending in the court.
