All 3 cholera patients infected from same source

SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- All three cholera patients are confirmed to have been infected from the same source, health authorities said Thursday, adding that they are conducting an epidemiological investigation.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said genes of the cholera bacteria obtained from the three infected people are identical, which means they were infected from the same source.

All three people consumed seafood at different restaurants on the southern island of Geoje earlier this month, the KCDC said.

"An investigation is underway to thoroughly test the seawater of the region," said a KCDC official.

Inspections are currently under way at the restaurants they visited, the KCDC said, adding that it is most likely that the bacteria may have been in imported seafood.

The diarrheal disease, which is curable with proper medication and treatment, annually affects 3 million to 5 million people and claims more than 100,000 lives throughout the world.
