WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate, Kia Motors Corp., saw their combined sales in the United States fall slightly in August as Kia's sales dropped nearly 8 percent due to slumping sales of the best-selling Optima sedan and Sorento SUV, industry data showed Thursday.

The two South Korean auto giants sold a combined 126,263 units in the U.S. last month, down 3.5 percent from 130,909 units sold in the same period last year, the data showed.

Hyundai's sales remained almost flat at 72,015 units, only three more than last year's.

But Kia's sales fell 7.9 percent to 54,248 units from last year's 58,897.

The Optima midsize sedan sold only 9,470 units, compared with last year's 13,980 units, while sales of the Sorento SUV, another best-seller for Kia, fell 16.4 percent to 8,533 units from last year's 10,211, the data showed.
