CHEONGJU, South Korea, Sept. 4 (Yonahp) -- Several foreign athletes scheduled to compete at a martial arts event here are missing, police said Sunday.

Three athletes from Sri Lanka set to enter the World Martial Arts Masterships in Cheongju, some 130 kilometers south of Seoul in North Chungcheong Province, have disappeared after arriving here Saturday. Their first event in jujitsu is scheduled for Tuesday.

Police said the three athletes have left their passports, plane tickets and other belongings in their rooms.

Four athletes from Uzbekistan have also apparently gone missing. Police said these missing individuals may seek to stay in the country illegally.

The inaugural martial arts event opened on Friday for a week-long run. The organizers said some 2,000 athletes and officials from 87 countries will take part in 17 events, including taekwondo, judo, kickboxing and kendo.
