SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Yonhap) -- The leaders of South Korea and Japan agreed Friday to closely cooperate to respond to North Korea's fifth nuclear test, Seoul's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said.

During their telephone talks, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed that Pyongyang's nuclear test is an "unacceptable" provocation, Cheong Wa Dae said in a press release.

At the summit in the Laotian capital of Vientiane earlier this week, the two leaders agreed to strengthen trilateral cooperation with the U.S. in countering Pyongyang's nuclear and missile provocations.
