CHEONGJU, South Korea, Oct. 1 (Yonhap) -- A truck driven by a soldier who was on leave from the army veered off the road and fell down a slope, killing one passenger and injuring eight others including the soldier, local police said Saturday.

The accident took place at around 5:25 a.m. when the 20-year-old soldier, identified by his last name Han, seemed to have failed to slow down the 1-ton truck on a curved road in Cheongju, some 130 km south of Seoul, and crashed through a guard rail, falling around 2 meters down a slope, according to police.

An 18-year-old man sitting in the passenger seat, identified by his last name Kwon, died, while seven others, all of whom were in the truck's cargo compartment, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Han is also being treated at the hospital.

Police said that all of them were high school friends and had drinks together that night before getting into the truck. They are also investigating the exact cause of the accident, including whether Han was driving while intoxicated.
