SEOUL, Oct. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is "closely" watching for a possible missile launch or nuclear test by North Korea over the weekend, amid speculation that Pyongyang might be planning military provocations, a foreign ministry official said Friday.

Concerns are growing that the North might may carry out provocations for the 71st anniversary of the foundation of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea that falls on Monday.

"We believe that the North is ready to carry out a nuclear test and all it needs is political determination," the official said on condition of anonymity. "We are closely watching (developments) over the weekend."

He said the foreign ministry is fine-tuning contingency manuals tailored to each type of military provocation by the North, including missile and nuclear tests.

"We are adjusting our response manuals based on (what we have done after) the fourth and fifth nuclear test," he said. "Every possible measure will be taken to keep the momentum for pressure and sanctions on the North intact."
